ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery)

ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) in Seattle, WA

At PHASE Plastic Surgery, one of our missions is to provide our patients with the smoothest, fastest, and least uncomfortable recovery possible. For that reason, board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Richard Baxter and Dr. Donald Brown implement the incredible benefits of ERASEnhanced Recovery After Surgery—to prepare and assist our patients for recovery after surgery.

ERAS is a set of protocols that are multimodal preoperative care pathways designed to achieve early recovery after a surgical procedure. These protocols were developed through extensive research focusing on maintaining optimal organ function and reducing the stress caused on the body following surgery. In practice, we have seen ERAS’s benefits for patients who undergo invasive procedures, including breast augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction, and more. Patients can return to their normal lives more quickly and enjoy the outcome of their surgery.

What Are the Key Elements Of ERAS?

The key elements of ERAS include preoperative counseling, focused nutritional guidance, standardized analgesic and anesthetic strategies, and proactive early mobilization. These protocols aim to enhance the physiological and psychological responses to surgery and have been proven through research and action to reduce complications, improve blood flow, and assist patients in returning to normal activities.

Nutritional Guidance

Poor nutrition can be detrimental to the outcome of your procedure and is a gateway for complications and body fatigue, which is why we take nutritional guidance with our patients seriously. We provide a recommended diet for our patients before surgery and following after, including details for balanced meals rich with foods containing nutritional ingredients that aid the body in healing.

Standardized Analgesic and Anesthetic Strategies

At PHASE Plastic Surgery, we strive to keep our patients as comfortable as possible throughout the entire process, from start to finish. With Exparel long-lasting anesthetic and TAP Block, we can dramatically reduce post-operative pain.

Exparel is a medication that helps control pain after surgery so you can have a more comfortable and easy recovery Exparel is a slow-release local anesthetic, not a type of opioid or narcotic. During your procedure, your surgeon will place the Exparel directly into the surgical site, and the effects will last anywhere from 24 to 72 hours.

TAP Block, or transverse abdominal plane block, is a peripheral nerve block designed to numb the nerve supply to the abdominal wall during a tummy tuck procedure. Your surgeon will perform this block before you wake up from anesthesia, typically lasting up to 3 days. The TAP block effectively relieves the incision pain in the lower abdomen, so you can wake up and start your tummy tuck recovery comfortably.

Proactive Early Mobilization

Moving is the best way to get back to feeling normal and stronger than ever after surgery. Of course, there is a recovery period where rest is best for you; however, being too sedentary can lead to complications, such as blood clots and poor organ function. Early mobilization is crucial to counteracting the physical stress of surgery. As your personal team, we will provide specific guidelines of when and how much you should be moving per hour and day that will lead you toward your overall goal of resuming all regular activities.

Nausea and Vomiting Prevention

Another measure we’ll take with patients sensitive to anesthesia is the prevention of nausea and vomiting. It seems nothing is worse than waking up from surgery to the feeling of nausea or having to vomit and the pain that comes from it. We offer our patients anti-nausea medication for an easier transition from anesthesia to recovery.
